Introduction to Bookbinding 'taster' workshop - Sunday, June 8th - from 11 to 1pm(ish).
We are delighted to host Tom McEwan's "Taster Introduction to Bookbinding" workshop on Sunday, June 8th - from 11 to 1pm(ish).
This workshop is ideal for beginners who would like an introduction to bookbinding basics, students will gain experience in sewing, folding & slitting, trimming, laminating, applying spine linings and will create their own work to take home. All materials are included.
Tom McEwan is an award-winning Design Bookbinder based in Ayrshire, SW Scotland.
Tom has a degree in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the Glasgow School of Art and trained as a bookbinder at the Glasgow College of Building and Printing. He has won a range of competitions, medals and prizes - most recently the 2023 Man Booker Prize binding for Paul Lynch’s ‘Prophet Song’ (a project involving around 150 hours of work and at least 25 distinct stages).
In 2014, Tom was elected Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, whose membership includes some of the most highly regarded creators in the fields of fine bookbinding, book arts and artists’ books.He designs and creates bound texts as unique creative art objects for a variety of prestigious projects, bespoke commissions, exhibitions and competitions. Tom also undertakes small-run edition work, box-making and book repair.
This is a free taster workshop
On the day, attendees are encouraged to donate an amount they feel represents the value of the workshop to them, to our chosen charity - the RNLI. (This course would usually be approx £30.00 per person)
